SHOULD I GO TO THERAPY ON VACATION?
As we head into summer months, many clients ask me if they should cancel therapy sessions while they are on vacation. This, like most things in mental health, doesn't have a direct answer.
Some things to consider:
1. Will you have a private space to talk?
2. Is your therapist licensed in the state where you will be vacationing? This one is key! If your therapist is licensed in California and you go to Hawaii on vacation, your therapist cannot provide therapy. EVEN telehealth is currently not permitted outside state lines.
3. Does your therapy improve your mood? Some clients walk away from therapy feeling refreshed, where others find themselves talking about trauma or pain. Work with your therapist to reschedule your session, or talk about a subject that is less stressful.
Taking these into mind, attending your session on vacation (assuming you are in the same state) can allow an additional moment to refresh and cleanse while you travel.
Talk with your therapist, weigh pro's and cons, and always listen to your own mental health.
