CAN I TALK ABOUT RELIGION DURING THERAPY?

When you start working with a therapist, the standards that we maintain include a full assessment that covers the following aspects of life: biological, psychological, social support network, and the role of spirituality. You are not required to answer all of the questions asked about your life. But, a good therapist will be thorough.

Religion for many people is a source of strength. Prayer is healing and supportive. Your therapist should not push religion on you, but should recognize how spirituality is part of your life.

You can also seek a therapist that is within your faith. There are therapists specializing in all religions and from all cultures. Sometimes that specialized understanding can be vital.

Never hesitate to discuss any thing about religion during your consultation or your regular sessions. Your therapist should offer support, understanding, and ask respectful questions. If your therapist responds otherwise, this is likely not a good fit.
