FRIENDSGIVING

Thanksgiving and the holiday season can be incredibly challenging for mental health. When we think about Thanksgiving, the image that comes to mind is typically a large family gathered together. This would be focused n cooking, eating, and sharing.

What do I do if I don't have a family like this?

There are some options when your family doesn't look like a typical Thanksgiving group. You may have one or two, or even no family to share the time. So many of us have moved and spread around the county for job oppportunities, but that leaves families scattered. The cost of gas and flights further makes the holidays a challenge.

This is where a "Friendsgiving" can become a good possibility. This is a gathering of friends, neighbors, coworkers, and acquaintences that would gather for a meal and conversation.

As a therapist, I have two messages about the holiday season:

1. Not all families look alike. A group of friends can healthily become a created family.
2. Spending a holiday alone does not make you flawed, only that we all face isoation at times.

Be creative. Any community connection is of value, especially during holidays.
