CRYING DURING THERAPY?

So many times I provide therapy to clients who cry during our sessions. The goal of therapy is to take a deep dive into emotions. Most individuals don't seek counseling when everything is going well. Simply put, clients reach out to therapy for the exact opposite. The client is experiencing something in life that they cannot cope with alone.  Therefore crying during your therapy session is normal and natural.

What should you do if you find yourself becoming tearful? Go ahead and cry. Cry and don't apologize. Tears are the way that many of us react to a flood of negative memories or emotions.  Your therapist will be well versed in the discomfort of the tears, and know it is just part of the journey.  Some clients may cry every session or not at all. Crying or not, therapy is a safe space to become tearful and be heard and respected at the same time.

Please go ahead and allow those tears to come if you need to. Don't apologize to your therapist. Grab a tissue, take your time, and then continue when you are ready.  You can alwas end a session early if you need some time. That is also something that your therapist will guide you toward if needed.
